Grand Seiko introduces two mechanical creations based on the 62GS case design that celebrate the beauty of cherry blossoms in early spring
In 1967, Grand Seiko introduced its first automatic mechanical watch, known as the 62GS. The watch was characterized by its distinctive bezel-free construction, allowing a seamless integration of the crystal with the case. Today, two new timepieces based on the 62GS design join the Heritage Collection, each with a dial that evokes the captivating beauty of cherry blossoms in early spring.
Both watches are powered by Grand Seiko’s smallest automatic mechanical movement, Caliber 9S27. With a case diameter of 30mm and a thickness of just 10.5mm, these compact 62GS-based creations are the slimmest automatic Grand Seiko timepieces today.
One of the key characteristics of the 62GS is the curved contour of its case sides. The curved case sides shine beautifully and without distortion thanks to Grand Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polishing technique. Combined with the box-shaped sapphire crystal, this skilfully applied polish enhances the refined elegance of the bezel-free design.
Sakura-Kakushi: Hidden Cherry Blossoms in Early Spring
The creation with the pink dial (STGK031) is inspired by sakura-kakushi, a phenomenon in which cherry blossoms are gently hidden beneath a blanket of snow. This tranquil scene unfolds in early spring in northern Japan, where the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, home to Grand Seiko mechanical creations, is located.
The delicate harmony of snow and cherry blossoms is expressed through the dial’s finely textured pattern and soft, greyish-pink hue. Changing subtly with different angles and lighting, the dial exudes a dynamic elegance that brings vibrancy and refinement to the wrist.
Sakura-Tsukiyo: Cherry Blossoms Under a Moonlit Sky
The dial of the other watch (STGK033) draws inspiration from sakura-tsukiyo, the tranquil beauty of cherry blossoms softly illuminated under a hazy, moonlit sky. In early spring, the significant temperature
shifts between day and night often create a misty or foggy ambiance, diffusing the moonlight into a gentle, blurred glow. This enchanting scene is elegantly captured through a delicately textured pattern with a silver hue that captures different nuances of light depending on the angle.
Both watches feature a see-through case back, allowing wearers to enjoy the beauty of Caliber 9S27. Measuring just 20mm in diameter and 4.49mm in height, Caliber 9S27 achieves the perfect balance of exceptional performance and refined slimness. Its compact dimensions allow for a comfortable fit on any wrist and lend the watches a sophisticated profile.
The movement’s escape wheel, created through MEMS engineering, is designed to resemble a five-petaled flower, integrating the floral theme into even the smallest design details.
Both new creations will be available exclusively at the Grand Seiko boutiques and selected authorised retailers worldwide beginning in April 2025.
