Tag Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition
Though participating but not exhibiting at LVMH Watch Week, TAG Heuer celebrated the occasion of their 160th birthday with a re-edition of the Heuer Carrera chronograph with a special 160 Years Silver Limited Edition. The newest Tag Heuer Carrera chronograph is inspired by the original Carrera “2447s” monochrome silver-dial watch of the early 1960s.
The Tag Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition is not a re-make of the original Carrera 2447S but it shares many of the same elements which made the vintage Carrera an emblem of classic chronographs of that era – monochrome silver-colored dial, polished case and pushers, and its three chronograph counters with concentric circles.
Possessed of an entirely different engine, the tribute to TAG Heuer’s 160th anniversary uses the modern Heuer 02 automatic chronograph birthed in the brand’s Chevenez manufacture in lieu of the vintage Valjoux 72. That said, the Carrera name and Heuer shield on the dial recalls the retro-appeal of the original model.
Other aesthetic updates come by way of brand new faceted hands and hour indexes. It goes without saying that the radioactive old-school tritium has been replaced with SuperLuminova and the winding rotor is visible through the display caseback, bringing the contemporary convenience of automatic winding is an arguable improvement on the closed casebook which hid the manually wound movement of old.
Overall, the LVMH Watch Week fair was a success. It’s a pity that TAG Heuer did not exhibit their novelties publicly, the sole exception was a small preview of the TAG Heuer Carrera re-edition commemorating the 160th birthday of the brand. Bvlgari was a big winner, leading LVMH watches with yet another world record women’s smallest tourbillon as well as new attractive price points for the flagship ultra-thin Finissimo series. Zenith made big impact with an old classic as well with the A384 El Primero pulling hard on nostalgic heartstrings but ultimately, it was the aesthetically minimalist Land Rover edition with matt case and khaki dial that was the sure-fire hit with those present at the watch week in Dubai.
