Montblanc’s Novelties Brings Us On a Journey Across the Gobi Desert
This year, for Watches & Wonders 2021, Montblanc has decided to descend the peaks of its namesake mountain and instead bring us on a journey through the Gobi Desert. These latest novelties are inspired by a partnership with the renowned mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, and his 2004 expedition through this very expanse of sand, named the 6th largest desert in the world.
What this means, is that for the 2021 Montblanc novelties, they are showcasing a host of watches with incredibly beautiful brown hues. Additionally, these watches will be centred around adventure meaning they will be dynamic and sporty pieces, perfect for more casual, everyday use.
Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Limited Edition 2021
Not to be confused with another blue 1858 Geosphere launched in collaboration with Reinhold Messner, this new limited edition was designed to reproduce the brown hues of the Gobi Desert’s rocky terrain. The lacquered dial of this fantastic watch starts with a lighter beige in the centre and gradually turns to a dark brown as it reaches the outer ring. The case is made from satin-finished bronze and paired with a glossy brown ceramic bezel.
Additionally, the caseback will feature a realistic scene of the Gobi Desert and was achieved through the innovative use of lasers. Even the colours are a result of laser-generated oxidation. The watch is powered by Calibre MB 29.25 movement with displays the world time by using both the northern and southern hemisphere of the earth positioned at 12 and 6 o’clock.
Montblanc Heritage Manufacture Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 100
Continuing this brown colour scheme is the Heritage Manufacture Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition 100. This watch brings back the brand’s highly legible approach to the complication offering the month, day and date in easy-to-read subdials at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock position. The difference with this novelty is the brown colour found throughout the watch.
The dial offers a warm and intense shade of brown that was created using an innovative process. First, the metal of the dial is finished with a sunburst decoration in the middle and a grain finishing on the hour ring. Then, the colour—Sfumato brown—is applied to give the finished product incredible depth. Complementing the look is a 40 mm case in 18k rose gold with curved lugs and to stay true to its vintage inspiration, a boxed sapphire crystal was used. To complete the colour scheme, the watch is paired with a brown sfumato alligator strap.
Montblanc Pytagore Small Second Limited Edition 148
Yet another brown piece in the 2021 lineup pays tribute, not to the exploits of Reinhold Messner but rather the age-old principle of the golden ratio. The watch starts with a movement, the Minerva calibre No. 48, developed and produced in the manufacture in Villeret in 1948.
They then meticulously improved on it following this golden ratio principle, turning it into the Manufacture Calibre MB M14.08. The dial also comes in a warm brown hue with a small seconds indicator ticking away at the 6 o’clock position. The beautiful movement is visible through the transparent caseback.
